Welcome to Sandem!
I am committed to producing and preserving the next generation of GSPs that are proven, structurally correct, and healthy - both physically and mentally. As a hobby breeder, I pride myself on protecting the breed and continuing its existence as a working and hunting companion. This is not a source of income, but rather a passion that requires true dedication, research, and a lot of hard work. The GSP was developed in Germany in the late 1800’s to be an all-purpose dog - bred to point, retrieve, trail wounded game, hunt both large and small game, furred and feathered and to work in low or heavy cover as well as water. The GSP is first and foremost a working breed. In order to preserve the number one breed trait, an all-purpose gun dog, we must continue to breed for traits that make this possible. All of my dogs are proven hunters and receive exposure and training to quail regularly and are natural swimmers. They are also all health tested through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for, at minimum, heart, eyes, hips, elbows, and DNA-tested for breed specific diseases. The GSP must also be structurally sound to promote longevity, which is why I believe it is important to understand and adhere to the breed’s written standard and make structural improvements when producing the next generation.
The essence of the breed is unrivaled versatility.
We must respect the breed’s history as primarily a hunting dog, bred for a purpose, and as such has high levels of activity and energy that needs to be channeled. The GSP is an excellent breed for a multitude of tasks outside of hunting, including nose work such as scent work sports and detection work (SAR), obedience, and dock diving. In addition to its history as a hunting dog, the GSP should be sound in temperament and should make a wonderful family companion. I will strive to put temperament at the forefront of every breeding decision I make to help preserve the functionality of the breed.
